Christmas in Tenerife.
Christmas in Tenerife is a little unusual. Canarians live Christmas to the full, but the weather doesn’t usually get cold enough to
have snow in Mount Teide (the only place where we can find snow in Tenerife). Christmas decorations in Tenerife in shops and
shopping centres are displayed at middle of October. And then, at the end of november or beggining of december, every little town in
the island of Tenerife is decorated for the Christmas holidays. Some towns are worth visiting at night to appreciate the beautiful
Christmas lights displays. Like the usual one in La Orotava, Los Realejos and Santa Cruz.
Christmas Eve in Tenerife is the biggest celebration of the year, along with New Year’s Eve. On Christmas Eve the whole family get
together to celebrate Christmas. Although there isn’t a a traditional Christmas meal of Tenerife, the sweets are very important and
traditional. Turrón, polvorones and peladillas is the most traditional Christmas sweets. Turrón is a hard bar of melted sugar with
peanuts, really delicious. And of course, there are many variations of turrón. The original one is hard with peanuts, but now days
there are all imaginable flavours and different textures. Like soft turrón, chocolate, walnuts and cream and so on…
Polvorones, also very traditional, are made with flour, lard and sugar (often have ground almonds and nuts)and this is baked into a
biscuit, very tasty. All of these traditional Christmas sweets in Tenerife, and in the rest of Spain, are accompanied by a glass of
spanish cider.
People in Tenerife would be celebrating Christmas Eve in family up until late. Eating langostins, serrano ham, solomillo steaks,
loads of traditional sweets and cider. On the 25th, everybody is in bed or simply watching Christmas television programs. All the
shops and restaurants would be closed, therefore is no one in the streets. Santa Claus is not traditional in Tenerife, so there is
not present exchange until the sixth of January, “Three Magic Kings Day”.
So, while in most parts of the world Christmas comes and goes in one night, in Spain, and in Tenerife the party is only started.
Everybody get really excited, the shops are packed with late shoppers. For two weeks, the atmosphere is beautiful and exciting at
Christmas in Tenerife.
At this time of year, the weather in Tenerife is rather unexpected. While in the north of the island the weather usually gets cooler, in the south of Tenerife the sunshine would be hot enough to bathe at sea. So, as expected, Tenerife is very busy with tourism around Christmas and prices of hotels go up a lot. But the amazing thing is how you could be enjoying a sunny and cosy holidays on Christmas in Tenerife. The south of the island usually mantains hot and sunny all through the year, while the north is cosy and more family type of Christmas holiday.
The Nativity recreation is something worth seeing on Christmas Eve in Tenerife. There many different representations in different towns. The Living Nativity in Tigaiga, Los Realejos is really beautiful and done by the locals of the town of Los Realejos. Is being done now for the last 35 years.
